REGULARIZE! Song in support of the ILP for the rights of the migrants

We celebrate with hope and determination the Spanish government's agreement in January 2026 for the extraordinary regularization of nearly half a million people who have migrated and remain in the country without legal status. Grassroots groups spearheaded an urgent and sustained social demand. They collected more than 700,000 signatures with the ‘Regularization Now’ campaign, which democratically underpins the Popular Legislative Initiative (IPL).

This initiative addresses a human rights issue, since irregularity "implies a condemnation to labor exploitation, invisibility before institutions, lack of legal protection, or de facto exclusion from essential public services" (Congress of Deputies, 2023). As the Spanish Minister of Economy, Carlos Cuerpo, pointed out, “Spain is one of the fastest-growing economies in the eurozone [...] if we look at the Spanish case, our experience with immigration has been positive” (Euronews, 2026). However, for years, hundreds of thousands of people have contributed to Spain from the shadows, facing uncertainty and vulnerability. Therefore, this decision is, above all, an act of redress and recognition of an existing social and economic reality. Likewise, all of society benefits from the increase in tax revenue.

In addition to the vindication of migrants’ rights, this achievement of organized civil society highlights the positive contributions of so many people on the move, dismantling false narratives, prejudices, and hate speech.

Our hope is that this step by Spanish society will serve as a model for a culture of encounter that fosters a more compassionate and fraternal world.
